Raising awareness of "scholasticide"
Shades of Anger, May 7, 2024
May 7, 2024
Good morning! Important reminder: it is up to all of us to speak up to protect Palestinian students and faculty around the world.
Editor’s note: next Saturday, May 11, is World Keffiyeh Day. Plan to wear a keffiyeh proudly that day! Learn more about the symbolism of the keffiyeh, and find out where to buy one, here.
LEARN. With pro-Palestine student protests happening on campuses around the world, now is a great time to learn about “scholasticide,” here. The term was first coined by Professor Karma Nabulsi to describe the, “systematic destruction of Palestinian education by Israel.”
Image description: graphical and text-based logo of “Scholars Against The War On Palestine.” The graphic on the left features a stylized Palestinian flag and olive leaf in green, red and black. The text-based logo on the right is the name of the organization in black, red and green.
NOTICE. How does it feel to sit with the knowledge that the Israeli government is trying to further erase the Palestinian people by destroying their rich educational culture? A culture that includes not only priceless historical documents, but also connects the world to the present and future of the Palestinian people.
ACT. Download the “International Actions Against Scholasticide” toolkit (in .pdf format) here.
SHARE. Right now, send this email to at least 3 people you know are university students, faculty, or staff anywhere around the world. Raise awareness about the term scholasticide to help the world save the rich heritage of Palestinian higher education!
ASK. What does the destruction of every university in Palestine mean to you? Please reply to this email to let us know.
In solidarity for liberation for Palestine,
Kay Coughlin, on behalf of the Shades of Anger collective
*If you aren’t familiar with the history of how the Carnegie family (founders of the many Carnegie charitable endowments in the U.S.) first obtained their substantial money and power, Andrew Carnegie was a white man and was one of the “robber barons” of the late 19th-early 20th centuries in the U.S. He gained his fortune by exploiting the environment and workers, and benefitted from the complicity of corrupt government agents.

Shades of Anger was created by a global collective of women to raise awareness and inspire action to free Palestine. We also believe in liberation for Sudan, the Congo, Haiti, and all places where systems of oppression are causing immense suffering and crushing the life out humans. We are led by women of the Global Majority/BIPOC. Shades of Anger is for everyone who wants to act for liberation and you can learn more about it here.
