Palestinian journalists in Gaza tell their stories, and Israel silences them (May 6, 2024 post)

Shades of Anger

May 6, 2024

Good morning! Important reminder: it is up to all of us to speak up to protect Palestinian journalists.

Editor’s note: next Saturday, May 11, is World Keffiyeh Day. Plan to wear a keffiyeh proudly that day! Learn more about the symbolism of the keffiyeh, and find out where to buy one, here.

LEARN. Last Friday, May 3, was World Press Freedom Day. Watch this youtube video, “Documenting Loss: Palestinian Journalists in Gaza Tell Their Stories,” from the Carnegie* Endowment for International Peace.

Yesterday, May 5, the Israeli government fully enacted their recent legislation to ban Al Jazeera from Israel. Watch the video from Al-Jazeera, “Al Jazeera’s pre-recorded ‘final report’ from Israel, as ban enacted,” here.

Image credit: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Image description: A screenshot of the video (see link in paragraph above). The image shows a man with short dark hair and a short beard, standing in a refugee tent camp, wearing a bulletproof vest that says “Press.” The text in white on the screen says, “covering the crimes of the occupation against people, against citizens, against civilians,” and the title of the video, shown in black letters at the bottom of the image, reads, “Documenting Loss: Palestinian Journalists in Gaza Tell Their Stories.”

NOTICE. How do you feel when you think about the journalists who have been killed in Gaza? Do you feel grief, anger, outrage, shock, disbelief, or something else? Does it make it worse for you to realize that the Israeli government is essentially dismissing their contributions - and the significance of their deaths - by banning legitimate media outlets?

ACT. Follow the work of Palestinian journalists on the Al Jazeera network and on all social media outlets.

SHARE. Right now, send this email to at least 3 people you know who believe in freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

ASK. Who are the Palestinian journalists you already follow? Please reply to this email to let us know, so we can create a list for our community.

In solidarity for liberation for Palestine,

Kay Coughlin, on behalf of the Shades of Anger collective

*If you aren’t familiar with the history of how the Carnegie family (founders of the many Carnegie charitable endowments in the U.S.) first obtained their substantial money and power, Andrew Carnegie was a white man and was one of the “robber barons” of the late 19th-early 20th centuries in the U.S. He gained his fortune by exploiting the environment and workers, and benefitted from the complicity of corrupt government agents.

Shades of Anger was created by a global collective of women to raise awareness and inspire action to free Palestine. We also believe in liberation for Sudan, the Congo, Haiti, and all places where systems of oppression are causing immense suffering and crushing the life out humans. We are led by women of the Global Majority/BIPOC. Shades of Anger is for everyone who wants to act for liberation and you can learn more about it here.
