Addressing Anti-Black Racism and Charity in the Movement for Palestine

Shades of Anger, May 26, 2024 post

May 26, 2024

Good morning. Remember that YOU can take action in support of liberation, for Palestine and beyond!

LEARN. Watch this video from @iheartericka1 on TikTok and posted on LinkedIn by Jade Zuberi, which talks about settler colonialism, white rappers, and anti-Blackness.

NOTICE. What feelings or thoughts came up when you heard criticism of Macklemore and those supporting him? What about when they said that this is not about charity or benevolence? Did you feel defensive, supportive, apathetic? For all those who are not Black, have you considered your role in anti-Black racism before - what feelings does it bring up for you?

ACT. Make sure you’re following Black journalists, writers, and creators. As you continue to boycott apartheid products, find a (local, if possible) Black-owned business that can replace a regular item you purchase. Also, consider whether your advocacy / action / activism is centered on liberation for all people, including and in particular Black folks. For more resources to learn and take action against all the genocides, check out Revivifyy’s resource page.

SHARE. Right now, send this email to 3 people who you’ve talked to (or should talk to) about boycotting, and talk to them about re-investing in Black businesses.

ASK. What did you learn after reading this email / what do you want to learn more about now? Please reply to this email (or, if you are reading this online, leave a comment below) to let us know.*

Shades of Anger was created by a global collective of women to raise awareness and inspire action to free Palestine. We also believe in liberation for Sudan, the Congo, Haiti, and all places where systems of oppression are causing immense suffering and crushing the life out humans. We are led by women of the Global Majority/BIPOC. Shades of Anger is for everyone who wants to act for liberation and you can learn more about it here.
