Resistance to antisemitism

Shades of Anger, March 24, 2024

Always remember: YOU can take action every day to help liberate Palestine. Our recommendations for today are focused on understanding antisemitism. We do NOT condone any action that is anti-Jewish or antisemitic, just as we do not condone actions that are anti-Muslim. But as advocates for Palestinian people, who are considered enemies of the political Israeli government, we must understand what antisemitism really is - and what it’s not.

LEARN. Many people are afraid of advocating for Palestinian human rights because of the risk of being called antisemitic. The truth is, speaking up for Palestinians is not antisemitic. Please read this primer booklet, “The Past Didn’t Go Anywhere: Making Resistance to Antisemitism Part of All of Our Movements,” written by April Rosenblum, a Jewish woman.

NOTICE. How do you feel about the risk of being called antisemitic? Notice the emotions and thoughts that come up for you. If you feel fear or anxiety, that’s a normal reaction, but you don’t have to let it stop you from advocating for Palestinians.

ACT. Practice saying the words, “Advocating for Palestinians isn’t antisemitic. I have a resource I can share with you if you’d like to learn about it.”

SHARE. Right now, forward this email to one person you know who may be concerned about being seen as antisemitic if they speak up for children being killed by the genocide in Gaza.

ASK. What help do you need to build the skills you’ll need to overcome the fear of being called antisemitic? Reply to this email to tell us, or leave a comment on this post.

In solidarity for liberation for Palestine,

Kay Coughlin, on behalf of the Shades of Anger collective

Shades of Anger was created by a global collective of women to raise awareness and inspire action to free Palestine. We also believe in liberation for Sudan, the Congo, Haiti, and all places where systems of oppression are causing immense suffering and crushing the life out humans. We are led by women of the Global Majority/BIPOC. Shades of Anger is for everyone who wants to act for liberation and you can learn more about it here.
